Mach III NEMA C-Face Friction Torque Limiter

Mach III announces the addition of a new product to its line of torque limiters. The NEMA C-Face Friction Torque Limiter provides overload protection in four sizes for 56C to 213TC NEMA motor frames.

The NEMA C-Face Friction Torque Limiters are spring applied friction torque limiters that feature a keyed input bore and output shaft. The units can be simply and quickly mounted between a standard motor and gearbox. Multiple facings are spring engaged to drive the output shaft until the pre-set torque range is exceeded. The torque limiter will then slip under the load until the jam is cleared or a manual or sensor-triggered shutdown occurs.

The torque limiter is completely enclosed within an aluminum housing that is both compact and functional. Corrosion resistant and food safe finish alternatives are available. The product is factory set to the torque range specified by the customer and in-field adjustments can be made, if necessary.

The NEMA C-Face Friction Torque Limiters can be utilized in a variety of machinery and applications including motor to gearbox connection, overload protection, packaging machinery, material handling equipment, food processing machinery and automation equipment.

New Mach III NEMA C-Face Mount Spring Set Brake

The Mach III NEMA C-Face Mount Spring Set Brake is the latest addition to the Mach III line of brakes. The spring-set brake provides power-off holding in four sizes for 56C to 213TC NEMA motor frames.

NEMA C-Face Mount Spring Set Brake is a spring actuated friction brake featuring a keyed input bore and output shaft. Multiple facings are engaged under spring pressure to hold the output shaft. Air pressure of approximately 65 PSI is applied to overcome the spring pressure and disengage the brake while additional springs between the brake facings assure complete disengagement.

Each brake is completely enclosed in an aluminum housing with corrosion resistant and food safe finish options also available. The units are designed to mount simply and quickly between a standard motor and gearbox.

The NEMA C-Face Mount Spring Set Brake is appropriate for use in packaging machinery, food processing machinery, material handling and automation equipment and other machinery applications where E-stop and power off holding, is required.

New Mach III NEMA C-Face Mount Air Clutch

Mach III announces the addition of the NEMA C-Face Clutch to its line of standard air actuated friction clutches. The NEMA C-Face Clutch provides easily controlled torque transmission in four sizes for 56C to 213TC NEMA motor frames. The air actuated friction clutches have a keyed input bore and output shaft and are completely enclosed within an aluminum housing. Optional corrosion resistant and food safe finishes are also available.

Each clutch is designed to mount quickly and easily between a standard motor and gearbox and features a soft start engagement. Multiple facings engage under air pressure to drive the output shaft with torque output proportional to the amount of air pressure that is applied. The springs push the clutch facings apart when the air is exhausted and will maintain full disengagement in the absence of air pressure.

The NEMA C-Face Mount air clutch is suitable for use in a variety of drive applications including packaging machinery, food processing machinery, and material handling.

New Mach III Flexible Torque Limiter Coupling

Mach III introduces the Flexible Torque Limiter Coupling, which offers shaft-to-shaft connection in a simple, low maintenance design. The coupling connects two supported shafts while providing overload protection for costly machine components. Multiple facings are spring engaged to transmit torque to the driven shaft until the pre-set torque range is exceeded. The torque limiter will then slip under load until the jam is cleared, or a shutdown, either manual or sensor-triggered, occurs.

The Flexible Torque Limiter Coupling was designed to accommodate light angular and parallel misalignment. The flexible coupling design allows for up to a 0.040 inch parallel offset and up to a 3 degree angular misalignment between the two coupled shafts. The torque limiter is available in four sizes, for shaft dimensions from 1/2" to 2" with torque settings from 50 to 7,761 pound inches. The torque setting can easily be set or adjusted in the field without having to remove the torque limiter from the machine.

Torque Limiter Solution Significantly Reduces Downtime Problems

Mach III was contacted by a power generation facility in which large, manually-operated control valves are utilized. The quarter-turn valves, located 16 feet in the air, are driven through right angle worm reducers. In as much as human beings are not equipped with torque sensors in their muscles, costly downtime failures were occurring when workers applied excess force to the worm reducer via the chain wheel. The result: broken gears. A single gear replacement can exceed $2,000.00 in parts and labor costs. Working closely with the facility's engineer, Mach III designed a special keyless friction torque limiter, analogous to the gas screw cap on your automobile, to connect the chain wheel to the reducer shaft.

In addition to designing and manufacturing the torque limiter, Mach III also provided the customer with a mounting diagram, including suggested dimensions for machining their existing chain wheel to accept the new device. Although Mach III offers the service of machining existing mating components, in this case, the customer's shop was comfortable with the task. The torque limiter was successfully installed and adjusted to a setting that would slip to protect the worm reducer when the worker applied force on the chain.

Those accustomed to working with other clutch suppliers might assume that only an application promising a considerable production quantity would merit this level of attention. But this customer needed only three torque limiters, and invested approximately $1,000.00. To understand Mach III's enthusiasm for addressing these types of very specific solutions, one need only to hear the report from the customer: "The new system worked perfectly. We are continuing to work with Mach III on adapting other valve systems throughout the facility."
