FAQ

How much air will my Mach III product consume?

clock March 11, 2010 22:48 by author Mach III Clutch

The air required to engage (in air engaged/spring released units) or disengage (in spring engaged/air released units) a clutch, brake, combination clutch-brake is the volume to fill the area between the cylinder and piston. Air is not consumed until it is exhausted from the unit. Air volumes are listed on the downloadable PDF detail sheets available for each catalog product on this website (click here for example). Air volumes of non-catalog products can be obtained by contacting engineering.

How do I machine a sprocket or pulley to mount on a Mach III product?

clock March 11, 2010 22:37 by author Mach III Clutch

The most important thing know is that you do not have to do this yourself.  Mach III will ship the sprocket or pulley you require pre-mounted on the pilot of the clutch, clutch-brake or torque limiter you’ve ordered.  If this is a replacement or new addition to an Mach III unit you already have, we can supply the sprocket or pulley pre-bored and tapped to fit the pilot.  Contact customer service for  pricing and information.

For those who prefer to machine their own sprockets and pulleys:

The unit torque is rated at 80 psi; what is the torque at 25 psi?

clock November 21, 2009 01:17 by author Mach III Clutch

Use the following formula to determine the torque rating at an alternate psi value:

Torque = (Design Torque x 25 psi) / 80 psi

Can I get this product with a bore other than the size shown?

clock October 14, 2009 11:30 by author Mach III Clutch

Every catalog product ordered is manufactured with the bore size specified by our customer.  The bore sizes shown for Mach III catalog products are MAXIMUM bores size available for that product with a standard keyway.  Mach III also supplies METRIC bores and keyways and can supply non-standard keyways.

If you have a non-catalog unit, the bore and keyway sizes are typically specific sizes associated with the special part number assigned to that product.  Contact engineering if you need to order a non-catalog product with a different bore or keyway size than you have currently.

The drawing says there is a wear-in period before the unit reaches its full torque rating. How long will this take?

clock October 1, 2009 22:51 by author Mach III Clutch
Wear in is a function of speed, load and cycles.  In most cases a few dozen cycles will achieve the desired burnishing.

What is the threaded hole opposite the air inlet in my clutch for?

clock October 1, 2009 22:41 by author Mach III Clutch

Mach III thru shaft clutches and all combination clutch/brakes require installation of an anti-rotation arm to prevent rotation of the cylinder.  The attached file contains installation recommendations.

I need to replace another manufacturer's unit, what do I need to do?

clock October 1, 2009 01:00 by author Mach III Clutch

The part number or the existing unit is a good place to start, but it is important that we have a complete understanding of how the unit is used before we can recommend or design a replacement.  Please contact the Mach III engineering department with a description of the existing unit and its function as well as any problems that need to be addressed.  Digital photographs of the existing drive are helpful.

What is the expected life of my Mach III product?

clock October 1, 2009 00:06 by author Mach III Clutch

When properly selected and operated, Mach III products provide a long service life with little or no maintenenance.  Service life varies widely by application due to factors such as speed, load, number of cycles, environment, and other variables.  Mach III's engineering department can provide an estimate of lining (friction pad) wear life based on your operating parameters.  Contact engingeering for assistance.
